Kapela obvykle řazená ke grunge, založená v Seattlu r. 1987. Ovlivněni jak sk. Soundgarden tak i britskou indie scénou. Hudba i texty často odrazem depresí, způsobených m.j. závislostí na heroinu. Brzy podepisují smlouvu s CBS (1. EP We Die Young, v r. 1990). První úspěchy se dostavují v r. 1991. Objevují se též ve filmu režiséra Camerona Crowa - Singles. Prvním vrcholem hudební dráhy je album Dirt. V lednu 1993 nahrazuje Starra M. Inez (původně u Ozzy Osbourna). Deska Jar Of Flies znamená 1. místo amer. hitparády. Po drogových problémech odchází v r. 1994 Staley a pokouší se zformovat novou skupinu. Alice In Chains se rozpadají. Staley se v r. 1995 objevil v projektu Mad Season a překvapivě se obnovuje i Alice In Chains, když vychází album Alice In Chains.
